I'm sitting here answering questions about this Merry Christmas vs Happy Holidays stuff. Why can't some people just accept that there are other religions besides Christianity? I'm a Druid, and I don't walk around telling everyone I meet "Merry Yule" or "Happy Winter Solstice." Some would be offended, and some just wouldn't understand. So I say Happy Holidays, or Season's Greetings. What is wrong with that? They are generic, politically correct terms that don't offend anyone.

I think it is fine and dandy that you say Happy Holidays as opposed to Merry Christmas but I will say Merry Christmas as opposed to Happy Holidays. Why? Because I grew up with it being Christmas... Christmas vaction, Christmas caroling... ect. I was Catholic but now I am one who follows no particular religion and I have no religious conotaions to my message. It is just how I extend my wishes to others... and that's that. I have no issue with whatever greeting people choose. I do have a problem when... say a Walmart greeter gets sued for saying "Merry Christmas". That is just low and petty. And it makes me all the more defiant about it... so this year my "Merry Christmas's" may be laced with a little acidy hiss that may even make Santa cower... (kidding by the way)

I just tell everyone Feliz Navidad, which literally means Merry Christmas in Spanish. We're not Spanish, so I get funny looks from people around here. Happy holidays, Merry Christmas, it's ridiculous already! I'm Pagan and dh is Buddhist but we put a tree up anyway and just call it "the tree." No mention of Christmas or Yule, etc. The kids don't give a hoot as long as there's presents under it anyway hehe.

Personally I couldn't care less. If anyone get offended over "Merry Christmas", then I wouldn't be the first to offend if I said it. I really don't acknowledge Christmas at all, I usually try to work holiday shifts. So in place of Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, I just say "Hi".

And to "Oh Tami!", do a little research on the origins of Christmas before doing a holier than thou rant. Because really, you're revealing yourself to be a consumer driven yuppie more than a Christian.

Im not offended by Happy Holidays because there are many celebrated at around the same time and which ever one you celebrate, have a happy one ya know?

However I do get annoyed that something that is obviously a Christmas party can't be called as such. At work we have a "Holiday Party" and there's a tree, and lights, and wreaths etc, is there another holiday besides Christmas that uses these decorations? Im not Jewish but I wouldnt be the least bit upset if there were Channuka festivities or if any other faith/people celebrated anything that didnt involve something illegal. I think anyone who does the tree, stockings, gifts, green and red ribbon calls it Christmas even if they are not Christians.

I personally am tired of the politically correct movement. Most people celebrate Christmas so I prefer Merry Christmas. If I run into someone who does not, then they can correct me. If I accidentally say Merry Christmas to you, then you can correct me. I am not going to adopt the Happy Holiday slogan. Heck, I wish my Jewish friends Happy Hanukkah and then a Merry Christmas although they are not Christian . . . so why not let me wish you both?

"Oh Tami !!", get a life. You and your kind are not the only ones celebrating holidays around that time of year. Or are people like you really that selfish and greedy that everything should focus on YOUR beliefs and that's it? Isn't greed and being that self centered a sin or something? Or does an atheist actually have to tell you that?

For any religious people who flip out over the use of the words Happy Holidays and Season's Greetings, I sure hope they know how good they have it then. There are other groups of people in this world who have much more important things to worry and stress over then stupid holiday greeting words!

It doesn't bother me one way or another what people say to me. If Christmas was truly about Jesus Christ's b-day, then why do they put up a tree? What does that signify in the Christian religion? Why do some Christians lie to their kids and tell them about Santa? What purpose does that serve, lying to children about a funny man in a red suit, flying with the help of magic reindeer, that drops off presents for good little boys and girls?

But more importantly, if it's Jesus' birthday, why do we give and receive presents from other humans? Shouldn't we give them to the birthday boy? Would it make sense to give a birthday gift to your father on your brother's birthday? Not unless they shared the same birthday it doesn't.

Just something to think about!

I don't have a problem with people saying "Merry Christmas". I *do* have a problem with people who get their noses out of joint if I respond with "Happy Holidays".

As for sending Christmas Cards to the ACLU - can I send "Blessed Solstice" cards to the Christian Coalition, too?

A note to Impossible_dream re: "At work we have a "Holiday Party" and there's a tree, and lights, and wreaths etc, is there another holiday besides Christmas that uses these decorations?"

Yes, there are. In fact, they weren't originally Christmas decorations in the first place...

It's been CHRISTMAS for centuries...wars have actually been stopped for this one day, cease fire has been called in answer to the angel's cry for "Peace on Earth, Good Will to Men".....
And now, for some ridiculous reason, we have to bow to the PCees and begin calling it "Winter Holidays" or some such tripe?
When someone wishes me "Season's Greetings" or Happy Holidays", I always smile and respond with "Merry Christmas!"
But I expect that, eventually, Christ will be driven out of your "Winter Festival", just as He has been driven out of so many facets of public life. It has been prophecied that, in the end, the beast would be given power to make war with the saints and overcome them...but, don't get too carried away with your victory...it is only temporary.
In the meantime, Merry Christmas to you and yours, and may the love of Christ bless you richly this season, and all through the New Year!

Oh, and to the guy who refused to put a nativity under his tree...would it really hurt you to humor Mom? How many more years do you think you have to make her happy? Whether you believe in Christianity or not, does it hurt you to honor your Mom's wishes? After all, how much space does the nativity scene take up? If it bothers you that much, you can always put it up again when she goes home.
You have the rest of your life to be an atheist...how many years do you have left to make your Mom happy?
But, I guess you have to follow your own priorities.....
