Do not put the ice directly on your skin. Hold in in a cloth napkin or rag.

Also take Motrin or another OTC noninflammatory, which will help.

I use a bag of frozen peas on all of my new piercings to not only reduce swelling, but also for a sense of relief.

You can use ice, just make sure it is wrapped in a towel or something so it isn't direct exposure.
