I would like to suggest you modify the question to as follows. Why, if Christians claim God controls everything do they attribute good things to God's doing but bad things God had nothing to do with? That question gets to the heart of the matter by identifying an apparent contradiction. It is the age old criticism of Christianity, the problem of evil. If God is all powerful then he could have stopped the evil. If he is loving he would have stopped the evil because he is all powerful.
To briefly answer a question that cannot be satisfactorily answered in such a short format Ill give you what the Bible says.
God controls everything, good events and bad events. There are primary causes for evil acts and a secondary cause. The primary causes of evil acts are man. Murder, rape, etc, etc. God is the secondary cause because he sustains man's ability to act out both evil and good deeds. God permits man's evil acts to occur for a variety of reasons such as, to allow such an individual to condemn themselves, to bring about a good that outweighs the evil, to show the world he is capable of creating something out of nothing (create good where good did not formerly exist). Biblical example - Joseph. God allowed his evil brothers to sell him into slavery. God then allowed his Egyptian master to send him to prison for three years for a crime he did not commit. Then though a series of miraculous events God causes the Pharoah to make Joseph the Prime Minister of Egypt where he ingeniously stocked up on grain and food for a seven year drought that engulfed the entire Middle East area of the day, thereby saving the lives of countless people, restoring Joseph to grieving father, and bringing his brothers to the realization that God's will cannot be thwarted. Add to that the preservation of this story in Scripture so that future generations could see how God uses evil for good.
There is truth in the statement, "when something bad happens it's a result of sin." Whatever pains we experience are always atributed to sin. Sinful world. Sinful people. Sinful governments. Bottom line...we cannot rule ourselves without God. That is one point evil serves to make.

Who says it's an act of God? I can think of many good things that have happened that God had nothing to do with.
