Did you know that most dogs/puppies given free to good homes have landed up in puppy mills as breeding stock. Just look at some of the rescued dogs on petfinder.com
one starfish rehoming connections out of columbus, wi has a few of them posted. Thankfully, most that were there are finding decent homes.

I wish you the best!

Please try to remember that the initial cost of buying a dog is the LEAST amount of money you will ever spend on a dog. Are you also prepared to handle vet emergencies, spaying/neutering costs, food, toys, training, etc.? If so, the best place to start looking is your local shelter. Dogs here will come at a lower cost than a breeder, if not free, and spaying/neutering will have already been done. If you have your heart set on a German Shepherd, you can also try breed-specific rescues in your area. Whatever you do, avoid pet stores - I can guarantee you these dogs came from puppy mills or backyard breeders and will have come from poor conditions and suffer health and behavioural problems. Good luck.

You should try an animal shelter, humane society, or rescue. You will save money, and the life of the puppy you choose. Buying a puppy from a pet store or breeder just adds to the number of puppies that end up homeless each year.

Best wishes to you.

Your best bet is to contact local rescue agencies. These dogs often come already fixed, with all their vaccinations, and fairly healthy. As long as you have $1000 ready for an emergency and $1000 a year put aside for standard care, then rescue groups are some of the best places to find a dog.

Check your local vet's office first. I'm sure the office should know of someone with puppies. Also . . . consider adopting an older dog. Why? No teething problems, housebreaking usually resolved, some may already be trained in basic commands. And, most importantly of all: They are among the first in line to be put down.

i don't but look at local humane societys aand if you find one adopt it! adopting.....
1.is better than buying
2.they will have a good home then from the one before (usually)
3.they could already be potty trained and commands(if you are looking for a puppy)
4.they will cost way less then buying one!
if you buy one there is a pretty hard chance that you will find a cheap puppy(really hard!) to BUY!!
ESPECIALLY PUPPY!!!!!
so i recamend you look at a humane society near you GOOD LUCK!

Sorry dont live in BC and to send one to you would be like paying for a purebred dog from a reputable breeder.

Your local animal shelter should be able to help you out. Try the canadian society for the prevention of cruelty to animals.
