Adolescents are "older" children but they are still classified as children, as they haven't matured mentally and physically yet. Childhood lasts from 5 years old until 18 (or whenever the person matures mentally and emotionally). It's possible to have 30 year old "children" because they've never really "grown up" mentally. Adolescence starts about age 13 and ends at the age of 18 or 19, and sometimes even at age 20. However the body loses its youthfulness and starts to mature about 25-30 years of age.

I moved out of my house when I was 17, on my own-no roommates or anyone to help me-finished school and now 21 and engaged. I did it whether or not someone called me too young, a child or whatever. I did it anyway! "Child" is a demeaning term used when you aren't "adult-like" or "immature". If he tells you you are a child then ask him his definition, respectfully, and explain that you want to know his definition of a teenager. More than likely he just doesn't want to give up his "little girl". I never had a dad that cared about me. Take advantage of him! Tell him RESPECTFULLY that you find it demeaning when he calls you a child and you feel like you should be called a teenager, he will then explain why he calls you a child and then respond by saying "Ok, I'm sorry for acting that way, how could I change", Realize that you will always be his "little girl" and that he just needs that assurance, tell him that you need him to help you so that you can change and become something he can be proud of. Never stop telling him how much you love him!

It's true if you are under 18 you are a child. When you turn 18 you become an adult. My grandfather is a Vietnam Veteran and he was drafted when he was 19 years old. At that time you were a child until you were 21. Because of the Vietnam War they made people adults at 18. He said that the country could not stand that 19 year olds were fighting in a war and dying and killing the enemy but were considered only children. Because of that they made the age to become an adult 18.

Oh my parents are still called children sometimes by their parents (my grandparents) even to this day. Especially my dad. His mother (my paternal grandmother) treats him a lot like a child and even yells at him sometimes. Sometimes he makes inappropriate remarks that he thinks are funny but my mom and grandmothers don't feel are funny and just immature comments. Sometimes my mom likes to say she has THREE children, not two. (Me and my little brother are the two).. They say that men never completely grow up and always are thought of as boys by their mother.

I hope that answered your question.

In our modern society we would class you as a minor meaning that you are not of legal age until 18 then you can do what you want in most states although drinking alcohol is not legal in some states until 21 for the safety of young people learning to drive or just had their licence a short time .As you say a child is up to 12 teenager is not used much here anymore .Western democracy.

This is an issue of semantics. It is like calling a woman a girl. While I don't love it, unless it is my friends going on a girls night out......I digress.

I am 35. I am my parents child. Although I am an adult. Your dad is responsible for you yet, and so although you may be a teenager, legally you are a minor, a child. If your parents put you thru college and you are on their insurance, then you are under their wing even past 18 in my eyes.

I would not bother spar over word play.

By paper your a child until the age of 18,some times even the people older than 18 still act like kids and cant handle responsibility when people younger than them can.

You are a child until you are an adult.

However you will be a child to your father forever.

One day you will appreciate what that means....but in the meantime you can call yourself a teenager if that makes you feel better.

Yes, but by child I think he means not legally responsible. You can't write a check or get an apartment or credit card or vote or drink, so in that sense, you're a child.
But I agree with you.

In a parents eyes you are a child to them...their child...and by law you are considered a child until 18.

I have a 12 year old son who claims he is a preteen....I tell him no you are my baby!! It is a parent thing....sry..I know this doesn't help you!!
