I know that the winner's dog and winner's b i t c h of each breed at a dog show are the ones who get points. But how many dogs does there need to be of each breed (and gender) in order to make the win official? I mean, can a dog be awarded winner's dog without any competition?

Yes, a dog can get points if there are no other Class dogs entered, and even if there are no other dogs of his breed entered that day. It's complicated, but here is the best explanation I can come up with! (Using male as an example, but the rules work the same for both sexes.)

The male will be awarded Winner's Dog, regardless if there are any other males entered in the Classes. He then goes to Best of Breed.

Should there be multiple class females entered and the male goes Best of Winners, he is awarded the same points as the female Winner.

Should the male get Best of Opposite Sex (meaning a female takes BOB) and there are champion males entered, the male gets the points as if the champion males were class dogs.

Should there be a champion(s) entered and he beats him/her/them, winning BOB, he is awarded the points according to how many champs he beats (sex doesn't count at this level). If he went BOB, he would also get at least the same points as the female Winner's (as he would have also won BOW) plus the champs would be counted, possibly pushing the points higher.

If there are no other dogs of the male's breed entered, he will not only get Winners, he will get BOB and go to Group. Should he go Group 1, he will get the same points as the highest other Group placing dog/female that day, often a 5-point major. On the outside chance he takes Best in Show, he will be awarded the points of the highest breed entered in the show that day!

How many points awarded depends on the breed and the area of the country being shown in. And the points schedule is changed every year. It depends on how many dogs/females of the breed are registered in each area. Below is a link to AKC's current point schedule.

Every breed in every REGION has a different POINT SCHEDULE! Which may change from year to year.

If there is only one "class dog" it WILL be WD(unless dumped for "lack of merit"-rare but possible!) but NOT get any points unless it ALSO goes BOW(Best of WINNERS) & there are bitc-h points. Then it gets that number.NOT "taken away" from the bitc-h,btw.

No, they can't. But they can get Best of Breed (and they get 1 point even if there's no competition). Points depend on the breeds.

No competition = no points. Point scales are different for different breeds. Check your show catalogue for info on your breed. Should also be printed in premium list.
