An Irish (Red) Setter is a gundog, therefore highly trainable, but you do need to start at an early age. The kennel should be large. I used to breed and show them, and when I sold a puppoy I always said'at the age of 2 years, you will ahve the dog you deserve' meaning that, if you trained it correctly you would have a loving obedient dog, but if you didn't then it would take over the house. As for them being loopy, well I had one that I trained and showed in OBEDIENCE classes at dog shows, and she did well.

Irish setters need a fair size kennel as some can grow (particularly dogs )larger than alsation size.
Irish setters are extremely loyal and very affectionate dogs as well as very energetic animals and can run for miles and miles . they are quite flighty up til the age of 3 when they tend to settle down but like most dogs are prone to have their daft hour or two everyday.the best thing Ican say about this breed is that they are tremendous with childrenand make an excellent family pet and providng they follow a health diet and well exercised they will not ask a great deal in return apart from you affectionate which you unable to resist their pleading eyes . enjoy yours as we have ours

My sister was given an Irish sitter when I grownup. First take a look at mom. Second take a look at the stud.If either one is big . Get a huge kennel.Irish setters are very good dogs to have. ours deiced the living room chair was hers and none else. They need room to run because they tend to be big dogs. Keep that in mind. Try the AKC. I hope you find what you are looking for. I know a lot about dogs not everything. i have 5 dogs myself. I love everyone of them.

I'm sure there are plenty of books out there on the caring of dogs in your local book club. Try contacting the Irish Setter breed club as well. On the other hand, I would suggest that you think about what you are asking. Setters are large dogs that need room to run. They were orginally bred to hunt. If you do decide to buy one, please find a reputable breeder and trainer.

I would recommend getting a plant instead, they dont stop you going on holiday, require walks everyday, dump in the kitchen and cost a fortune in food and vets bills.
If you insist on getting a dog write a note to yourself and put it somewhere safe saying,
"If I cannot look after this dog and need to give it up or rehome it, I am a coward who deserves to suffer great pain and ill fortune before dying a horrible death"
This will help to focus your mind to whether you actually want or deserve a dog.
If you do go to the red setter rescue website.

i would go and search the breed before you get the dog, and then get the dog, the worst thing that you can do is get a dog and not know what it was breed to do!

but here at some good website that i myself use:

I'D GET A LARGE KENNEL. SHE'S GOING TO BE A LARGE DOG. USUALLY GOOD TEMPERAMENT. CHECK WITH THE BOOK STORE OR BREEDER ABOUT THE BOOK YOUR LOOKING FOR. ENJOY YOUR DOG.

If you don't already know this, you shouldn't be getting the dog.
