I'm making the pillow in a football shape. It'll probably be about 15 inches long.

Well, you can use any kind of beans you want as long as they're dry and hard. However, actual bean bag pillows are made with PVC pellets, which you can find at Hobby Lobby type stores. The reason PVC pellets are used is that they will dry, while real beans will soak up water and possibly sprout something if the bag gets wet. To be safe, just buy a pound or so of them. It shouldn't be very expensive.

My mother made thousands of bean bag pillows out of real beans long before anybody ever invented plastic pellets.

You can use bird seeds, lentils, hemp seeds, anasazi beans, kidney beans, fava beans, unpopped, unseasoned popcorn, or most any other kind of bean you want. If the beans are "Parched," as most beans are, they will not sprout, although in areas of extreme dampness (where the cloth of the bag would rot away) they might get moldy. Beans that are not "Parched" can be cooked in the oven at about 450 for an hour or two to keep them from sprouting.

If you're paranoid about it sprouting (who gets their pillows that wet?) you can use plastic balls, aquarium gravel, or styrofoam balls.

If you're cheap, and you won't be getting your pillow too wet, you can use split peas, barley, rice, or wheat. These also will not usually sprout, but they have no exterior shell, and therefore are more likely to become moldy, mushy, or infested with bugs.

You can buy beans at Wal-Mart. Don't get the canned beans go for the dry only. You will need at least 821 beans; when you look at the bag you can figure out if that is about the same size as your pillow.

I recently found the empty bean bags in an assortment of colours ( I think they were vinyl ) and the "beans" packaged in the amount needed to fill the bags, selling at Wal-Mart. They were an average size ( standard, not child size ) I don't recall the price, but it was reasonable I think. They are sold seperately if you only need the beans. Good luck, happy shopping.

After I'm done laughing really hard I will tell you that they aren't actually beans, but rather styrofoam/plastic pellets inside of a beanbag. You can find these things by googling beanbags and then email the company.....they'll direct you to the right place. good luck, jack

Try JC Penney, they have in the past had refills for the bean bags they sell, possibly in the catalog.

Any dried beans that you want to use and any grocery store will carry them although you might want to go where you can buy them in bulk.
