Mental illness is best diagnosed by a social worker, psychcologist of psychiatrist. Behavior such as severe controlling may be improved by their help. Whether or not it is a mental illness falls into diagnostic guidelines. Generally a person with that behavior needs to seek professional help on their own volition. Hope this helps to answer your question.

All people have certain character traits and personality types. Some are compulsive about cleanness some about controlling the people and events in their lives some are compulsive eaters, drinkers, card players, Etc. These traits are only considered mental illness when the interfere with your activities of daily living for a period of more than 90, some 30 days. If you feel that you might be dealing with a mentally ill person please talk to a professional about it and get them to assist you in getting treatment for them.

u must be talking about your brothers wife. mental illness comes with a lot of varying symptoms. obsessive compulsive behavior, being psychotic, delusional, responding to auditory and visual hallucinations. mood disorders, depression, anxiety, losing the will to live , thought disorders. etc. but if this person does not have any of these symptoms, then they are most likely not mentally ill. some people like being in controll and are hard to live with. if the person is doing the controll in a relationship, there is not much you can do. some people in a controlling relationship know what to do, but find it difficult to assert themselves against the controlling person. i hope this helps your situation, and if it is your brother, your brother is the one that has to stand up for himself i know this is hard for you, as a brother, to stand by and watch this, but he, not you can change this situation your brother would benefit from professional counseling, as it sounds like he has the problem not his wife good luck hope this helps

The real issue is not about the other person, it is about you.

Set healthy boundaries and the level of "controlling" will not matter
.
To accept controllng at whatever level, is to let go of control over your own life.

If you know a person like this, there is not much you could do. If it is you, you can talk to your doctor about getting evaluated.

That is a gray area, the best I can say is that it all depends.
