you get rid of alot of the sore throats, throat infections, and tonsilitis problems. I had mine out and it wasn't too bad, you will feel some pain at the hospital, now it's outpatient I believe, so after you wake up and can take ice chips ok they will let you go home. Ice chips, popsickles, and cool drinks are best the first day, then soft foods like oatmeal, jello, soups, etc and no you don't have to just have ice cream, it feels good tho. You can't eat rough things for awhile like chips or things like pop that irritate. The pain isn't too bad, just like a sore throat a little burny and raw like when you are getting a bad cold.

I have not had my tonsels out but my boyfriend has. He definitly likes it a lot better. He never gets sore throats now, which is why he had to have them out. It'll hurt for a while, and you won't be able to eat solids for a little bit, but he was better in a matter of a few days. He was back to his normal routine in about 3 days I would say. Just make sure you're carful with what you eat, because your throat may bleed. Goodluck. :)
