this is what the Lord commands: when a man makes a vow to the Lord or takes an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word but must do everything he said......

does this make you more mindful with your words before you make a promise????

It sure does. So does the admonition about having our "yes" be "yes" and our "no" be "no". Especially when I said yes and regretted it (marriage)...what a mess that was!

Isn't that verse taken out of context? Nevertheless, I was in a situation recently, an internship for a church. They happened to be mentally/emotionally abusive to me. The internship was supposed to be 1 year long, but after 6 months my parents began to get very worried about me because I became very very depressed. My mom threatened to come and take me from the place. But, you see, I had made a commitment to the church. They even told the very verse you just quoted, and another one in Proverbs (or Psalms) which says: "A man of integrity promises even to his hurt." So even if it hurts you had better keep to your commitment. Unfortunately in light of the abuse, this was a lie from Satan (yes I believe even our enemy can twist God's word for his own purpose).

I had become a shell of myself. I even wrote in my journal in the last month of my internship: "I'm not even worthy to breathe the air God created... I don't have the power to love anyone, or even get up from the place I am currently laying on the floor."

So, finally I decided, regardless of what people want, I wanted what God wanted more! God kept telling me to leave that place, but because of my promise/commitment I was unsure that God was actually telling me to leave. Nevertheless, I took the risk, and gave them a two weeks' notice. Instantly I felt God's overwhelming peace.

However, with one week left to go, my boss convinced me to sharpen 800 plastic pencils (which I ended up having to do with a hand held pencil sharpener). He basically said I needed to do them with a positive attitude because it was my duty. Now I have tendonitis in my right hand, have been to the doctor for 9 months, and an occupational therapist for 3ish months trying to fix my hand. :) It sucks.

All of that to say, some pledges we make, some promises we say, aren't God's standards of commitment. (Things like marriage, debt, etc. are part of God's standards, and of course those things are serious issues when we decide to turn from our commitment to them). However, there are other pledges and promises we make that aren't necessary part of God's standards. We are always going to fail. Always. I believe it's a matter of, do we listen and obey the still small voice in us, and scripture, and wise councel, and prayer collectively? That's the true test.

ya. i think every one forgets that promis we made to god. but as long as you feel bad and ask for forgivnesss and try not to do it a gain than the lord is happy with us and still loves us.

Most definitely so.

In saying the Lord's Prayer [as in "...forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us..."]; or other prayers; or when taking the Nazarite's Vow;... etc.

Peace be with you.
