Here's another point -- No one really knows when they are going to die, and HOW they are going to die, either. That's one the scary parts. Most of the time that we think of death and dying, it is seldom pleasant thoughts. It is usually scary, creepy thoughts, so we get a little scared just at the thought of it. Spend a little time dwelling on it, and you get really scared. Add the idea of leaving every one that you love behind, and the idea that we don't know how the afterlife is going to be, (and WHERE we are going to be!!) it can get downright terrifying.
I know there is an afterlife, but I have 2 children, 2 grandchildren, and a lot of friends that I'm not ready to leave. I'm not scared to die, but the thought of dying depresses me. I had a scare last summer, when I thought I had a tumor in my brain. (I didn't.) But the few days I thought I did were SO depressing, thinking of leaving everyone behind, and thinking of going through chemo and the whole process.
It was a little overwhelming, and I was scared for my babies, thinking of not having Granny to look after them, and tell them all the things that I want to teach them as they grow up. Afterlife doesn't really play that big a role in the process of dying, when you look at it like that...

Well, I don't think that's it's quite death that scares us. I mean, I am only scared of dying because it's like, you're living, you die, then what...do you still make decisions? I think that everyone will always in a way be scared of death because they don't know exactly what's going to happen, unless of course, they truly believe in God. If you believe in afterlife, you might still be scared, because you don't know how it's going to happen or you might miss your family, but I do think it would reduce the amount of fear. Good question, it really made me think.

P.S...would you fear death?

Many of us, even Christians, fear DYING, the whole process of probably aging, becoming weak, feeble, getting some painful disease, etc. The whole process of "dying". None of us look forward to it; many "fear" it.
But, with Faith in the "afterlife", faith in being received into Heaven, when we have died ... therefore we do not fear DEATH. True, maybe a lot of us have a few "unfinished" things we would like to accomplish first. But we do NOT fear death. We expect that we will pass through the Valley of the SHADOW of Death.
This is because we have Faith in a Living Jesus, the Messiah, Who was dead and, behold, is alive forevermore.

I don't think you would fear death if you truly believed in an afterlife. I wish I did!

well i do believe in afterlife, AND i also fear death. the reason is, i am afraid of the pain, and honestly i'm pretty happy here. i'm not ready to leave. i imagine that so long as i live out a long, happy life, when the time comes closer i won't be so afraid.

for the people who believe in a GOOD afterlife, i don't think they generally fear dying, but fear the pain of death, and the people you love and their pain of you dying. if you believe in an EVIL afterlife, then you would obviously be scared because you would be going to a place of misery and hatred

I believe in the afterlife but no one wants to die and leave loved ones behind. death is made up of so much unknown stuff that it seems weird at times to think about it.

We always fear what we don't know or understand. Stevie Wonder said "When you believe in things, that you don't understand, and you suffer... superstition on the way".
Fear of returning to that which made us is irrational. We die alone, and no one wants to go to the after-life alone. But in fact we are alone from the moment of our birth, to the moment of our death. Everything in between has to do with us attempting to fill the void of loneliness. That's why you have friends and family, and for some religion, to assuage the anguish of loneliness.

Because it is not death they fear, it is the pain of their loved ones that they fear, not death itself.. unless one has not lived a full life yet, then there would be fear, because so much has been left undone.
