My neighbor was arrested a couple of weeks ago for manufacturing meth in his home and possibly on my rural property. I'm hardly ever down on the farm anymore, so he had plenty of privacy to commit his crimes. I found one of his campfire sites near a creek on the property, but, at the time, didn't know it was for drug making.
What do I look for? Is there a smell? What does it smell like when it is being heated? Anyone with first hand experience in finding meth labs out in the woods reading this and can offer suggestions on how to prevent this from happening again?
It's embarrassing to know the DEA, FBI, and such were on my place as well as his looking for dope making materials. I was told the drug sniffing dogs signalled many times on the abandoned house on the property, but when I went inside the house last week, I could find nothing out of place. Can I rent a dope sniffing dog to go on my own property and look for this hazardous material before it pollutes the ground water?

If you have reason to continue to think there is Meth, Ice being cooked on your property, then get the Law involved. You don't want to go anywhere near that place until it is proved and cleaned up. Don't worry about the polution. Can't do anything about it , now. The Meth, abusers, and makers kill ,if interupted. So with Great Warning, Leave it up to the Law enforcement. Don't even go there. Stay away, until they tell you that you can go to your property. You can also become a suspect, and be charged with being involved. So stay the heck away. Let the Law handle it.

If he was doing it out in the open there would be no smell per say that would dissipate! It's not so much the smell but the toxic waste generated and then discarded! Not only is the waste a carcinogenic and hazardous but it destroys the environment as well! If you do by chance find waste left in areas "do not touch it call a hazardous material team and have it disposed of properly"!

There is nothing embarrassing about trusting people... You may even save lives by having a DEA agent and dog clean up your place.. You should feel safe when hunting!! Let them know why you are calling and the reason for your concern... By what the others have said about the labs... Be-Safe.....

As an Ex user of the stuff(20 years) there is a very distinct smell.I dont really know how to describe it(it takes one to know one)but the best way I can describe it is an ether like smell.Depending on what he was using to clean and purify the product(washing the chemicals) Acetone to and other washes of the nature can be used. Now you said you found a campfire but that really isnt the best source for heat(hard to maintain temperature)they usaully use a bunson burner or propane torch, anything with a valve to control the flame as over cooking this stuff will cause an explosion,or melt the stuff hes trying to create.this stuff can be extracted with almost any kind of decongestant/inhaler for breathing material; and is extracted from stuff like sudafed, nyquil etc.also.It all depends on what the perp can get his hands on.Like I said before they most common method to wash this stuff after its concocted is to use Acetone.
Good luck with the search,Hope you get him,and get this mess outta of your life.I never created the stuff but like I said I used it for a long time and finally woke up to what the hell I was doing,to me and the people whom loved me

Yes - there is a distinct smell.
Another way to tell is by the presence of the ingredients.
Lye
Kerosene
Ether
Batteries (to extract lithium from)
Muriatic Acid
Rubbing alcohol (in large quantities)to name a few...
Call the arresting agency and let them know what you want to do.
They will help you locate the stuff, and help you in getting rid of it. You will be doing them a favor, because it will strengthen their case against your neighbor.
This stuff is very hazardous and nothing you should try to get rid of on your own.
