How 'bout the truth? It's generally the preferred answer...and keeps you from having to remember what lie you told to whom.
Is there supposed to be something wrong with not having a girlfriend? There shouldn't be...I've got more respect for people who make their lives happy as singles, than those that aren't happy unless they've attached themselves to someone (anyone)...
