My husband is in the military and there's a good chance we could get stationed there. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect. I tried looking up a few websites but nothing I've found is very informative.

We love the Military in general.

Sometimes it depends on the individual though. Overall... The military are treated with the respect they deserve.

Hawaii is a great place to visit and an even better place to live.

However... It's not for everyone. It can quickly get boring for some people. You might get island fever more quickly if you live somewhere besides Honolulu where there are fewer people and places to go.

It's laid back and that's great on vacation, but it seriously bugs some people, especially "Type A" people who work fast, are on time and expect the same from others.

Not much racism that I've seen. Everyone is a minority. I am a Caucasian and I've never had a problem.

However... There is a lack of trust with people who are new to the islands though. This is usually misinterpreted as racism.

Many of the locals have known their friends all their lives. It can be hard to make new friends because most people have enough friends that they relate to as if they were a big extended family. It can be difficult to break into such closely nit groups of people.

Some people have culture shock. No people who can relate to relate to you, your music, food preferences, life experiences, etc, etc... It's a drag for people who are not open to new things.

Many Caucasians who recently arrive believe this lack of trust, inability to assimilate with the locals and make friends is due to racism, but from my experience, it's not. That's just the way it is.

It is like moving to a foreign country. Everyone speaks English but it's just different. Very different... It's hard to explain.

Visualize what it would be like for an English speaking person from India to move to a small town in Texas. Even though everyone speaks English... The dude from India might not be able to make friends very easily with the locals. It has nothing to do with racism or the military.

If you're a flexible type of person, you'll probably love it. If you're set in you're ways... You'll probably want to leave after a while so you can surround your self with others who share your preferences, tastes and have had more similar life experiences.

I've been here for about 10 years and have lots of friends. However... most of my friends are other people who moved here from the mainland or are in the military. Many of my best friends only stayed here for about a year before moving back to the mainland.

Again... I love it here. But... It's not for everybody. (IMO) It's a better place to live for people who were born here than for people who move here.

Some of the natives are nice. Some don't like mainlanders at all. Most of the natives are very welcoming and helpful. But like anywhere you go they are going to be some people that don't like outsiders. The name they call mainlanders is Howlie, not sure about the spelling. Mostly when they give you a hard time they just want to see if you back down. LOL. Hope you have a good time in Hawaii, its B.E.A-utiful!

I was born there when my dad was stationed in Hawaii with the Air Force. My parents loved living there and they made great friends with the locals, some friendships they have maintained to this day.

The lifestyle is different, more laid back.

NO. Hawaii is the most racist & hypocritical state in the nation. While saying they are filled with Aloha (Love) and smiling they call whites "Haole' and then say, "But that's not racist." However, when any term is used for other races (Flip, Jap, Chink, etc.), those are considered racist. ALL nicknames for race are racist.

Also, the Japanese have all the good government jobs and even discriminate against mainland Japanese because their English is good.
