Zhang in the spelling may have more than 2 chinese character. But more commonly used for surname (Not last name) is 张 &章.

Strictly speaking, it is surname, or family name. The surname or family name is pass on from generation to the next generation. All the same, and will not change. It can be from parent, or given by a king.

Like the great Cheng Ho (Zheng He), he actually surname is Ma, but the King gave him Zheng, and he used it till he die.

There is also not different between Korean and Chinese surname, or name. Of cause the Korean will not admit it, they are actually one of the tribe of greater Chinese.

Within the Chinese, there is also a lee 李, there are southern Chiense, northern Chinese as well as Korean having this surname.

Another common surname is jin 金, the currently leaders of North Korean. Common read as Kim for western people.

If you know korean well, their name is also written in Chinese character, and not their own Korean characters.

Hope you will be clear on this.
