The host and hostess will be serving spaghetti. Is it correct to twirl the spaghetti around your fork or cut it into bite-size pieces? Also, is it impolite to cut your salad into easy-to-bite pieces? Thanks!!

You don’t have to use the spoon. The spoon is there to help you wind the pasta onto your fork. Twirl the pasta with a fork either by rolling it around in the spoon or just use the fork alone, keeping the fork tip in contact with the plate.

You wouldn’t think that there would be a controversy about how to eat spaghetti. But, some are of the opinion that a spoon should not used and using a spoon is frowned upon in Italy. Some also feel that cutting spaghetti into small bite-sized pieces is not proper. However, it should be fine to cut the strands to shorten slightly before twirling.

Slurping pasta is the only method that is never proper.

Yes, if salad pieces are too big, its fine to cut into smaller pieces

It is correct to swirl your spaghetti around on a fork with the aid of a large spoon. I think it's odd to cut spaghetti. Also, it is not impolite to cut your salad with a knife...but it is impolite, in my opinion, to serve salad that needs cutting.

Twirl it. Salad should be bite size when served. If not, cut them to bite size.

Whichever way you can eat it neatly is perfectly proper. If anyone makes an issue of it, they are being rude, but you can reply that your method is how you learned to eat spaghetti.

The salad SHOULD be in bite sized pieces, but if it is not, feel free to cut it.

The spinning of the spaghetti is a status symbol. Thus, if you spin your spaghetti it is a sign of lower social status. But cutting of the salad is in some cases acceptable. If the salad is too big for your mouth then yes you may cut it.

I just read about this on Miss Manners. It is OK to twirl or to cut.
