There's really no objective standard for what comprises emotional abuse.

It's usually severe and ongoing emotional trauma inflicted in a situation where one partner wields power over the other partner. There is an imbalance of power, and the weaker partner is consistantly pressured to feel bad about themselves.

How to fix that? Raise social consciousness about the value of all people, about respect, tolerance, individuality and diversity. Society should never condone or minimize the effects of emotional abuse, and abusers need to be aware that society disapproves.

Relationship counselling should highlight the detrimental effects of emotional abuse, and it should be a focus of ethics classes in school.

How much of it goes on? I doubt that there's any good way of getting numbers on it.

Emotional abuse is when someone verbally mistreats you. Like calls you names, tells you your stupid or that your worthless. It happens more often than people think and it's a horrible thing to go through because I went through it for 3 years when I was married to my ex. I divorced him because of it. The only way I know how that we can fix emotional abuse is for the people that are the victims of the abuse to stand up to the people that are dishing it out and say I'm not going to take this anymore. I hope I answered your question properly.
