My rottweiler (when younger) did the same thing. I had river rock in the backyard landscaping of my new house. When playing outside, and occasionally just when pottying, he would grab a rock and play "keep away" and eat it before I could get it out. Usually he would throw these up in a day or two. One did get stuck however, and it cost me $800 in surgery to get it out. After that, he never ate a rock again.
I had tried everything to get him to stop eating the rocks. I kept him on a leash, sprayed habanero pepper sauce on the rocks, even borrowed a "shock" collar from a friend. The spring after the surgery I removed all the rock from the backyard, just in case he ever got the urge to eat them again. I still find the occasional rock in the yard, but he has never made a move to eat one again, and it's almost 5 years later. Beware, smaller rocks are more dangerous. The larger the rock, the less of a chance it will migrate past the stomach, and your dog will eventually get rid of these himself. Smaller rocks can pass through the intestinal opening and become wedged like a cork in a bottle. Be observant for signs/symptoms of intestinal blockage: vomiting, listless, lack of interest in food/water. If your dog has eaten a rock and begins displaying those symptoms, GET HIM TO THE VET IMMEDIATELY!!! The longer you wait, the greater the risk of infection, perforation, necrosis, sepsis, and death.

grab the back of the neck (where mom normally picks them up) yank it a little and yell NO!! after a couple of times, he will realize that he is doing something bad and when you yell no he will automatically stop. Try walking him on a leash anytime you are outside. Also keep constant watch on him, puppies are like kids

I really love animals and know a lot about them and i do know that puppies can be a lot like real human babies and everyone knows never to let babies get near anything they could choke on or put in there mouth, so really the best thing for your dog would be to make sure that whe you are not around her/him to keep him/her away from rocks or anything else he/she could swallow. When you are around him/her keep a close eye on her!!
~best of luck!

You should really keep an eye on him and keep him on a leash at all times. This is the only way you can assure that he won't pick anything up by watching him all the time. Also, they do make basket muzzles that dogs can wear on walks not for biting but to keep them from eating inappropriate things.

Teach them to "Leave It". This is done on leash. When they go for it, a slight tug, and "leave it". If they are on leash you also have control of the puppy so you can remove any foreign material they pick up in their mouths.
