Read th book Rebels And Redcoats by Richard Holmes. Its not about reconstruction its about two different philosophies on life. One is a society looking to the UK to retain its European identity and the other is a rebellious indepedent one looking for its own identity, which for some reason looks to French or Irish culture to support its identity. Either way all you are tallking about is the USA`s identity as a white culture. Possibly the main cause of the problem within your country is the insularity of the society and the system which seems to allow ignorance about the cultures of the people who live next door to you. Well as a southerner who holds nothing against the northerners I cannot really answer it for myself. I can say I have met a veritable plethera of rednecks who continue to hold a grudge and I do not see that particular element being ready to give up the ghost anytime soon.
