Let me start by saying I have naturally black hair. I had it lightened at the salon over the summer, but I got tired of it, so I just dyed my hair back to black. It worked out fine, but now I want to lighten my hair up a tad again...just to a lighter brunette shade, but when I bought the Loreal "Les True Brunettes" lightener, it didn't do a thing! How can I lighten my dyed black hair a lighter brunette color? Again, my natural hair color is black...(I read other people's questions like this, but it seemed they were all blondes trying to get back to their lighter color...) So quick recap: I was originally black haired, then lightened to caramel (professionally), now dyed back to my original black, now I want it lightened to a lighter brunette.

Get a MUCH lighter color (like a blonde) and leave it in for half the amount of time suggested in the instructions. This is because the lightest colors are the only ones with enough of the bleaching chemicals in them to make any difference in black hair. The first time, you don't want to leave it in the entire time to make sure that it does not lighten to much, you can adjust this the next time if you'd like to go lighter. :) - good luck!

I had almost the same problem. I have naturally black hair and on a wild moment decided to see what it would look like blonde. Needless to say it looked horrible and the only color that would completely cover the blonde and get back to my natual color was, of course, black. I would definitely see a professional about attempting to lighten it. As many a hairstylist has told me, black hair dye is the hardest to deal with. Most places won't strip it out for fear of severe hair damage, and I can tell you that buying a really light shade and attempting to put it on your head at home will only end in disaster. The best way to go would be to have a hairstylist highlight your hair heavily using a method called bleaching and toning. It's essentially bleaching strips of your hair until they have lightened a bit to a decent looking color, usually in the dark brown range, and then putting a toner over it if the color is too brassy or bright. This will soften the black haircolor alot. If you want the color gone completely, my best recommendation would be to have patience, and let the haircolor grow out and then dye it lighter. It's almost impossible to completely lighten dyed black hair.

Please don't try this at home. You will most likely end up with orange hair if you follow the advice of the buy the blond color and use it for half the time. Really, I mean it. I am a stylist who specializes in color correction. I make a great living fixing what people do at home. You might want to consider getting highlights instead of an all over color. Highlights don't have to be blond. You could get some nice chunky chestnut brown streaks that would blend well with your dark hair but would be a lot easier to maintain. You wouldn't have to go and get your roots touched up every 4 - 6 weeks like you would with an all over color. Good luck!

Don't use hair dye remover it will damage your hair! See professional stylist to dye your hair again. If price is an issue start saving or have a friend help you with an at home kit available at your local beauty supply/ pharmacy. To keep your dark tone but get brown/ dark auburn effect use semi permanent. To go lighter your hair has to be permanently dyed. Note its important to read and follow all instructions in the at home kit When dying black hair blonde the box must contain a booster(its a powder) this ingredient is add to the activator to stripe your hair from black to blonde. Try loreal texture and tones.

Ok, for one, color will not lift color. So you will need to go to a salon and have them lighten it for you. They might charge you as a color correction so you might want to do a price check around first. Box color is really hard to get out esp. black so it will prob. take a little time. Good luck

Stop experimenting with your hair for some time and let the dye fade and then see an expert. If you go about any of the suggestions to do at home....believe me in some years you'll will have no hairs to experiment with!

The best thing to do would be to go back to a professional. Hopefully they will get the shade you are looking for.
