Its more like upset, but upset in a way that you were surprised by whatever it is that happened...Like, if something unexpected and bad happens to someone you know, you might say "I am really busted up over this." So yea, it is depressed, but there is an element of unknown or surprise there too.

I think the expression originally was used between guys as a way to show you have been hurt by being hit or kicked in the testicles. It seemed to refer to one-upmanship between boys. From that, it seems the slang broadened out to mean anybody who puts another person down or gives them a hard time. Now it is referenced between guys and girls and has a general "put down" connotation. Another derivation of this term is "bust my chops".

yes, it could be like depressed or angry. or just upset. whatever it is it's really bothering them.
