My immediate response is spend it with friends instead. But on the realistic level you wont want to let your mother down so here is how to survive relatives that think you are a loser....

A) Limit how long you will be around them. Arrange to be somewhere else until after the guess are due to arrive.
B) Greet each one with a big smile, kiss, hug, handshake (whatver is appropriate) and tell them how great they look.
C) Have something special prepared that you cooked, wrote, made that you can share with them.
D) When you feel things are about to fall apart excuse youself, thank them all for their kindsness and concern and tell them you have some things to do. Then leave the house and walk... and walk and walk.... Go back when it is late enough to go straight to bed.

Alternatively you can offer to do all of the cooking.... ever notice how the cook spends all the time in the kitchen while every one else has to socialise whether they want to or not....

Think of the most perfect, succesful person you know. Think of the nice job they have, nice house they have, how happy they are and how much money they make.

Now, remember this one fact. NO ONE is perfect. Whoever it is you're thinking of has many closets in that big fancy house, and many skeletons to fill them. Some people just hide their crap better than others because they're incredibly insecure. Maybe that person you are thinking of, he who is so wholesome and perfect, is cheating on his wife...maybe with a man, and maybe that man sells him meth...sound familiar?

Yes, everyone is imperfect. Even your relatives. Don't worry if they think you're not perfect, because you KNOW they aren't.

just tell them that you are working on trying to get your life together...they dont need anything further than that...after they ask you and you answer then then turn the tables on them and ask them what they have been up to..change the subject...you can always say how great it is that you are all together again this holiday...just change the topic and try to make things positive..
