Andrea's question about her cat staring at her made me think.

Why is it that a cat can give such an intense stare? It feels like my cats are staring into my soul. People have told me that the cat isn't really looking at you, but no one can say what the cat is actually looking at.

(I hope I got my point across, I can't seem to put the right words to my thoughts on this.)

the stare of a cat is its way of dominating other cats, they will stare down another cat if it turns away the cat will attack and chase it....If you stare at a Siamese cat get ready to protect your face because it will spring at you to claw you face...

I think it has more to do with the way cat's eyes are wired than any "People Whisperer" skills our respectful fur-balls may have.

Cat's irises can dilate 3x what ours can. They are nearsighted... the world is blurry, but they are excellent at detecting movement (that's how they hunt). They only need one sixth of the amount of light that we need in order to see. The eye shine? Caused by reflective cells behind the kitty's retina to further amplify light.

So, as to why cats can stare so long and so hard? Check out kitty's pupils, and compare that to the amount of light in the room. Maybe your cat is dreaming of stalking YOU in lieu of other distractions, or off in her Zen place where her dreams are blissful.

Whatever the cause, I believe they understand our hearts, minds, and needs through their purring empathy, not their stare.
Happy cuddling... ~ Andrea

I once heard animals can see the supernatural. Maybe the cat saw a spirit or something. I'm not sure about t cat but one time, a dog kept barking at a corner, but no one was there. Maybe it saw something.

Cats can see into your soul and they expect you to be able to do it back. I have experienced intense feelings of love from my cats when they have done this. There is also a feral cat, one of a group that I feed on my back porch, who will not let me touch her, but will stand back when I put out a plate. She will look at me with that same intense feeling, as if to say thank you. It is communication on a spiritual level.

I know, I've thought the same thing with my past cat. She would do the same thing, and I would say, " Tigger what are you thinking?"

No one knows why they do this, but I think they are totally focused on your eyes, as to mean they are connected to you that moment.

Kitty has a brain the size of your thumbnail, God love him or her. There's no thought that we can be aware of, although there must be something there, no?

That cat is thinking about how it will systematically devour your remains were you ever to die. Believe me.
