You can give him antidiarreah medicine. But it does sound like he needs to go to the vet. It also sounds like a worm infestation. So go ahead and worm him.

In the meantime feed him bland food.

The first thing you should do is take him to the vet. They may ask that you bring in a fecal sample so they can do tests. Diarrhea can be the result of many different things. It's hard to say what it could be with not knowing your baby's history. I know mine suffered from it when they first came home - stress. Then it came back and it turned out their food was too rich. Now they only get it when they get into people food and it upsets their tummy. If he is going that often, he is probably very dehydrated and the vet may need to give him some fluids. Until you can get into the vet
1. withhold food for 12 to 24 hours to rest the stomach
2. make sure plenty of water is available
3. you may also mix pedialyte or gatorade (50/50 mix) with his water
4. you may use Pepto-Bilmol: 1/2 to 1 tsp per 5 lbs of body weight (max of 2 tbl) up to 3 times a day or 1 tablet per 15 lbs of body wgt 3 times a day.

Poor baby . . I hope he feels better soon.

If your dog is otherwise acting normally, chances are the normal flora in his digestive tract has gotten out of control. Before you go to the vet, there are a couple of things you should try.

First off, NEVER give your dog anti-diarrheal medicine for humans. Yes, there are a few human medicines that can help certain canine conditions, this is NOT one of them.

Do not feed him for 24 hours. Make sure he has access to plenty of fresh water. Clean his food and water dish thoroughly with hot water, rinse with a bleach/water solution and allow to air dry. After 24 hours start feeding him small meals more frequently. For example, the first day, give him only half his normal allowance of food, but split into 3 or 4 small meals instead of 1 or 2 larger meals. Gradually increase this until he is back to his regular portion sizes and meal times. If at any point he begins to have diarrhea again, take the food away and call the vet.

In my experience, taking the dog off food for a day usually does the trick. I know some people who give their dogs plain (unflavored) yogurt, or swear by ground beef and rice. I've tried both of these without much success.

Good luck.

As a nurse for humans, I can tell you that having diarrhea is the body's way of ridding itself of some unwanted micro-organism. When a human is having diarrhea, we normally don't give an anti-diarrhea medication unless we know the culprit or the patient is in danger of being dehydrated.

If you dog has been having diarrhea for 3 days, he is probably getting close to having dehydration which could potentially lead to electrolyte imbalances and getting sicker.........unfortunately, you can't always treat dogs with human medications. Giving pedialyte for dehydration or a human anti-diarrhea medication could be potentially deadly for dogs since you don't know if it's safe for them.

If I were you, I would take the dog to the vet tomorrow. They are the experts on dogs................don't wait until closer to Thursday because everyone will be closing down for Thanksgiving.

I don't know about where you live, but there is a 24 hr animal hospital in my city, and they probably answer questions like this by phone. You should check and see if your city has a 24 hr animal hospital.

Good luck! Sorry your pooch is sick. Hope he feels better soon.

Sincerely,
Robin_in_Tennessee

Hi, I just wanted to say my dogs get that way once in a while if I give them too many treats or if they eat too much. I would check with a vet though. Sometimes if you change food this will happen thats why you have to gradually change over. There may be something in the food that they can't take. My lab was like that as a pup and always had diarrhea.I had to change from puppy chow. I was told to give him pepto bismol and it helped now as he got older I gave him an Imodium ad just one and that straightened him up. Make sure he has a lot of water to clear out his system too and rehydrate him. No food from the table. Big culprit too. Good luck

I'd first check for dehydration- pull the skin on the back of his neck (or between his shoulder blades, parallel with his spine) up in a pinch with your palm and fingers (sort of like a tent shape.) Release it. If it goes back down to it's normal shape pretty fast, he's not dehydrated. If it stays in that tented shape- he is and that's not good! If the skin stays up there for more than a few seconds, I'd take him to a vet NOW.
If he doesn't seem dehydrated, take a survey of his behavior the past couple days..
is he listless?
sleeping alot?
Vomiting?
Drinking alot?
Peeing alot?
NOT peeing?
Eaten anything unusual?
Gotten into the trash?
anything unusual?
If you answer yes to one or more, call the vet!

IF and only if you are pretty sure you know he ate something he shouldn't have (and it's not on the doggie toxic list!) then switch his diet to plain white rice (if he won't eat it, put a few spoonfuls of babyfood chicken on it. Or some chicken broth 'tho my pack is on to that and holds out for the babyfood!) Start off with SMALL amounts. (Hey, if he's going to vomit or poop it, you don't want to clean up a large pile of it, do you?)

An alternative that works a treat is canned pumpkin (NOT pie filling! Just plain canned pumpkin!) a few spoonfuls on a little rice will help firm things up. (It also loosens a constipated dog, so it's a good idea to keep it on hand for both situations!)

IF and only IF he's not dehydrated, I'd give him 24 hours on rice and pumpkin. If he didn't show some improvement I'd be at my vet's door.

Who knew there was a poison control number for our pets?! But these folks are GREAT. I know from personal experience. 8-}
And they've got nice lists of plants and household things toxic to your dog.

First thing you want to do is stop the runs, because this causes dehydration making matters worse. Plain ole "Kayopectate" is the wonder drug for dogs with the runs.
It is also advisable to make arangements for a Vet to check your dog for possable intestenal infections. 99 % of the time when a dog gets the runs it is nothing more than they eat something that they shouldn't, but that 1 % will get you every time if you do not follow the proper steps and get to a Vet.

Diarrhea can be very serious. Especially a puppy can dehydrate and die pretty quickly. And if it is a puppy, you have to consider the possibility of parvo, which will pretty much definitely kill him without treatment. Although if he's still on his feet after three days and doesn't have other symptoms that's less likely.

Call your vet and see if he will suggest some things to try before bringing him in. Most likely, though, he'll say you need to bring him in. If that's what he says, do it. Not only is the diarrhea itself potentially serious, it could be a symptom of something else serious that needs treatment. Three days of constant diarrhea is a big deal.

Really only your vet can give you a serious answer on this. Your dog needs a physical examination. I would make an appointment with your vet and bring stool and urine specimens that you collected within a couple hours of going to the vet.

it's been three days - which (seriously!) is TWo days past when U should have taken him to the vet's.

any time a dog or any other animal has more than one soft or liquid stool in 24 hrs, U >>> Go! >>>
one is a small worry; 2 or more in one DAY is a much larger concern! we can't help U with this; it's call-the-Vet time.
hope he's feeling much better, ASAP!! :( poor pup...

Your dog most likely has worms or some other type of parasite inside him. Take a sample of his stool to your vet and have them test it. They will determine what the problem is and get your dog the proper medication. This is something you NEED to consult a vet for.
