I'm looking for a good viewing alternative to the UFC, preferably a MMA league with more varied styles and less "restrictive" rules on striking, etc. Any suggestions ???

Pride fighting. from time to time you can catch it on fox sports next and the dvds are relatively cheap. The skill level of the fighters in Pride is insanely higher than the UFC. Its really not even close. The matches are more exciting and the rules are similar except for in Pride you can stomp and soccer kick when your opponent is on the ground. I really can't stress how much better the competition there is. Any of the top 4 guys from each of their weight classes could come here and destroy the UFC champs in the same class.

There is Cage Rage, Strikeforce, Hero's, K1, World Fighting Alliance(WFA), International Fight League. The Pride Fighting championships of Japan is the only organization better then the UFC. The have great fighters from all over the world, where as the UFC likes to promote Americans. Top to bottom Pride has better fighters.

I'll be blunt: you must follow PRIDE in addition to the UFC in order to be a true MMA fan. How else are you going to see Fedor Emelianenko, widely considered the no.1 MMA fighter in the world, in action? Also check out Crocop, Wanderlei Silva, Gomi, Shogun, Henderson, Barnett, etc. etc. Less restrictive rules include allowance of stomps, soccer kicks and knees to a downed opponent's head, and knees and kicks to someone during a shoot attempt.

You know what, just look at this clip of Fedor vs Crocop: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4yIo1iE7_s&mode=related&search=

Some UFC fighters like GSP are fantastic though.
