where is the best place outside of the U.S. to travel in January?

I'm looking for a fun vacation spot for about a week.

If you want to relax and get some sun and sea, the Cook islands are GREAT. It's very hot at that time, Rarotonga, the main island is relaxed and friendly. It's not really touristy, but there are great resorts to stay in, or little self-catering places if you'd prefer. It's safe and has little if any petty crime. The people are so laid-back, and it's an inexpensive place to visit.

The island is surrounded by a huge reef, so the water is always peaceful and warm to swim and snorkel in, with tons of tropical fish and coral. The water is safe to drink, the air is filled with the smell of flowers. I'm not kidding!! The food goes from the simplest fresh fish and fruit right through to a really good authentic italian pasta. It's not a place for endless shopping, and you'll find that by the end of the week you'll be so relaxed it will take you a whole day to walk up the beach.

Also what's cool is the transport. For $15 dollars (NZ currency is used) you can get your licence to ride a scooter. No helmet required, speed limit is about 20 km per hour. It's so relaxed you can hire your scooter and then ride it to the police station to get your licence!! Rarotonga is so small it takes about 45 minutes to ride right around it.

It's a great cruisy holiday spot. I'm not exaggerating about any of this. it's really real. I've been 3 times, and really enjoy unwinding there, and just playing. It looks exactly like a cliche'd tropical island from a looney tune cartoon.
