It's not true that "A lot of NJ is slum" as the previous person stated. When you get close to the City, NJ isn't very nice. It's beautiful once you get out a little farther west though.
I would avoid Newark unless you're just going to the airport.

The slum of New Jersey would be Camden and Newark is far from there.
Newark is not the best city in the state, but there are good areas - such as Ironbound. And the city has been cleaning itself up alot.
It honestly depends on what you are doing there.

newark isn't the safest city in the world... the area where the universities are is ok, but overall its not a city you should be walking around alone at night.

A lot of Jersey is somewhat slum, but I have been to Newark many times, did not find it story book bad.I have many times pulled my car into rest stops just to take a break and watch the jets flying in and out, never had a problem.In this day and age nowhere is safe,We have to live.Do not worry, enjoy,Massachusetts
