Put in a paper bag with an apple in it (the apple naturally gives off the same gas that is used to ripen bananas).

I don't know about ripen, but to choose a ripe one, you have to pick one with a soft 'button'. (opposite of the stem side) and if it doesn't budge when pressed, it's not ripe, but if you can budge it, even just a little, then it's ripening up nicely. Can probably be eaten that day and be delicious, BUT the button can't be too pressable or it's over ripe and it will be just mushy and gross.
If you need it in a day or two, pick one that has the button that will move but not hard... that way it's known to have a little 'give' in the ripening department, but on it's way. I never worried about HOW to ripen it. good luck.

Leave it sitting out at room temperature. I guess you could try the brown bag trick to hasten the ripening. Keep an eye on it, though.

I put mine on top of my refrigerator for a few days. I know when it is ripe enough to eat because I can smell it every couple days until it is fragrant.

Like any other fruit... place it in a paper bag (preferrably with other fruits) and let it sit on the counter. (I mild temperature works the best)
