Hi I was just wondering if anyone know/could think of any problems in this engine change. Im guessing I would need to change the back axle and gears plus the drive shaft. A 460 will fit onder the hood after cutting the shock towers back. Also I know I would need to put in a c6 trans. The old c4 is auto... Thanks

Ps. I already have both blocks and trans. Both need to be re built

If your budget is under 2 grand stay with a small block and have fun . A 460 with a few good parts is going to let you down for the money and work it takes to get it going . If you have 10 grand to spend you could do something nice. An "FE" big block was available in 67 . A 390 bored .080 is a 406 , with edelbrock medium riser heads and a 3-2V set up would be the coolest you could get - about 5 grand
I have seen a lot of the 67-68 big block mustangs have the *** end pass the front end going around turns because the weight is 70% or more on the front tires.

the 460 is way to go. a 289 is NOT a better engine and the money and effort to get a 289 to do what a 460 will do is a waste of time. especially when the 289 rips in half and your cam is in the oilpan.
a 390 will fit so a 460 should fit with little extra effort.
I would do the 460 with a well built c4(< c6 is a power hog) and a 9 inch. also use the biggest radiator you can fit.

You need to think about what you intend to do with your car. If drag racing is what you are looking to do a 460 prepped right would scream without taxing the motor to much. If street driving is what you want think about building a stroker 302. The 347 is capable of 400+ hp on pump gas and will fit in without any mods. You can also buy crate motors. If you want to do the 460 the way to do it is to use a Mustang II front end to give the clearance necessary.

The 289 is a better motor, and will turn a higher rpm than a 460 will ever do.

Dont mean to get upset but that car is a classic. Dont ruin it just drop in a 351 windsor stoker. My dad has a 408 stroker 351 windsor and makes gobbes of power with ported heads good intake and a nice cam. His running around 450 hp.

on a good stock 289 you can easily get around 16-18 miles per gallon with it,i own one that my nephew had and it does real good on gas,its a 66 model, the mileage isn't that bad on those cars, good luck

If I were you I would rather put in a 302 H.O. (High Output) motor w/a T-5 speed transmission, lots of power without having to increase the weight.

why do it?
that small block is good for at least 350 horses,
carroll shelby proved that
go to vintageford.com in sactamento area code is 916
big blocks do not provide as much hp to wt as small blocks

You will also need to replace and/or fabricate several new crossmembes and add sub frame connectors.
