i love burpees:
from standing, squat down put hands on the ground. kick legs back into pushup position, do 1 pushup, bring legs back in, jump up as high as you can. repeat.
this one'll work your whole body. a favorite of convicts.

U might want to try peripheral heart exercises. These involve alternating lower body movement with upper body movement. Best examples are circuit exercises. These exercises work your heart rate faster than if u trained your lower body or upper body only.

I agree, running is one of the most efficient forms of cardio. If you're a beginner, try the couch to 5K program on www.coolrunning.com. It helped me a lot!
