hi we have a .dmp file of size 76 MB in c:\. After the work on clients is finished we export the .dmp file all this my sir looks but today as my sir was absent i tried to export the .dmp file like this. i typed exp in runbox on windows start button then a dos window came asking for user id & password i gave them both next it asked for file i gave location c:\nlr.dmp it asked whether to export i just hit enter again some questions, every time i hit enter it asked whether to export table or rows or entire table i selected entire table. it started exporting export completed. but the file size is too large (compared to the previous exported files which are just around 75-80 MB in size) this one is nearly 190 MB there is a lot of data in it. i am worried whether i had made any loss to the data is there any way to bring it back to normal mode ( i am using windows xp sp2 with oracle 9i) any help in this regard is highly appreciable i've to do it by tomorrow morning) my cell no. is 9399920694.

If you specified just the directory (c:\), you probably didn't overwrite the original file. I think the default file name is exp.dmp. If you specified the directory and filename (c:\nlr.dmp), then yes you overwrote the original file. Either way, exporting data from the oracle database does not delete any data from inside the database.

Cygnosis has the spectacular answer for Oracle exp yet I only elect to throw in the alternative of utilising Oracle's archives Pump in case you're working with greater moderen variations of Oracle. expdp hr/hr itemizing=exp_dir DUMPFILE=tables_exp.dmp TABLES=workers, jobs, departments
