I talked to my brother & he said yeah, uncle hit him a few times, but nothing major... I told him any kind of abuse was major...

Then I talked to the other brother who told me he hit him more then a few times... (the adoptive brother from the abusive past)... I think that he's hiding something else, very painful, though... I talked to the police but they said that I would have to have the "victemS" -- yes the victems -- come wih me and make a statemnt! Any advice on getting my brothers to talk to the cops?

hmmmm... i am really sorry about your situation. you were right to go to the cops. i think what you need to do is to tell your brother that what is going on is WRONG, and that if he talks to the cops, he will never have to feel that emotional and physical abuse again. you need to make it clear to him that if he goes with you to the cops he can get help and everything will be okay. he won't get in trouble and he'll be safe. it will be great and he will feel better. but he probably feels afraid that something will happen to him if he tells. but make him feel as safe and secure as possible. ps- let me know if this advice was helpful.

That's going to be really hard to do. But i really think there is no way that you can convince him. Why? well, because your brother might feel like if he tells the police, then he will get really beat up by his uncle when his uncle finds out or after he gets of jail. But what i can suggest is that you catch it in the act or your brother. By recording it or taking a picture. Good Luck.

first of all, make sure you're talking about abuse.
that means not just a slap in the face or something like that. not that i'm saying these things aren't wrong, but people make mistakes and a slap in the face, while it is a mistake, is not abuse.

how old are your brothers? are they children? teenagers? if they're children, see ifyou can get a school counselor or psychiatrist to talk to them about it. they'll know how to deal with it. if they're older, try an older friend, someone who's been there, someone they can look up to.
basically, you can't do it. most males i know have this very firmly in their minds - you're their sister and they're supposed to be strong and tough around you. they're supposed to watch out for you, not the other way around.

If your brothers are under age 18 you can try calling your state social services agency. If either of the brothers are over 18 and do not want to press charges, there is not much you can do about it.

wow. I have a feeling that all the answers to your question will convince him. Print them out and show him how important it is to report this abuse. Ask him if he really wants this to happen to others, because once someone abuses, they don't stop. It is a sickness. Good luck.
