We have a small dog (7 lb havanese) that has become overly protective of my 2 year old son. He keeps biting people that try to get near him. We have tried trainers, but it hasnt worked and we are at the point now where we feel he needs a new home. We can't handle another person being bitten, expecially a young child.

So does anyone have any ideas of websites or phone numbers we can call to find him a loving home?

Thank you all in advance

Of course the humane society- you will need to make sure the dog is up to date on shots and is spayed or neutered. They keep the dog in a no kill shelter until it is adopted. They only put down animals who become sick due to limited funds - so it is encouraged for everyone else to DONATE! :) Or try looking up breed rescues on line- they will foster the dog until its found a perm home.

you can look up Havanese rescue and explain your problem . Some rescues will take owner surrenders and some will not. If they will not take your dog they can advise on where you can take you dog or better yet a solution to your problem so you will not have to give up your dog. Here is something to keep in mind not all people claiming to be trainers know what they are doing. The trainers in petsmart ,petco and stores like that have training class but you know how most of them became trainers? They took a correspondence course over the internet and had 3 weeks mentoring under a "real" trainer. Anyone can say they are a trainer but unless they have plenty of experience with many different breeds and many different problems they do not know what they are doing and quite honestly a knowledgeable trainer should have been able to help. Good luck to you.

There is not a most humane way to give up a dog. The responsibility of a dog owner to the dog is for life. There are qualified trainers out there and it sounds as if you have not found them yet or are unable to properly follow through with their directions for the dog. The dog is fixated on you and your family, you are the Alpha and the dog has assumed the role of protector. That assumption needs to be broken an undisciplined dog will always be a dangerous one. Why would you transfer your problems to someone else? If the dogs aggressiveness is such a problem or inconvenience the only logical choice is to have it put to sleep and then never own a dog again.

A DOG IS FOR LIFE NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS !!!

That statement rings true for all pets and you can substitute the word Christmas for any other date that applied when you got the dog. It is a member of your family. Pets are not disposable beings when they become an inconvenience or a disruption to the family routine. Either deal with the behaviour or take responsibility and have the dog put down.

Try the humane society first if you have one or another way is to post an ad at your local vets. My vet has a bullitin board for such things.

You could lock the dog up whenever a stranger comes over to visit.

put an ad in the local newspaper or take to the pound. Someone will end up loving your dog.

www.havanese.org/hcaRescue.htm

If you choose to place the dog in someone else's hands, make sure you are honest with them as to why you need to place him. And make sure it is someone that is capable of handling the problems the dog is having.

Try the animal shelter, or the Humane Society.
