The M-16A2 is the standard issue rifle for the US Military. The M-4 entered service in 1997 for specialized units such as the 82nd Airborne Division, and others. They needed a lighter, more compact rifle since they are the quick responders to combat action.
It is unlikely that the M-4 will be commonly issued to every Soldier or Marine. Only those whose mission requires a compact weapon.

the m-16 is, as far as i know the standard infantry rifle. although they military seems to be phasing out the m-16 for the m-4. that is not the smartest choice though b/c the m-4 does not have the range the m-16 has, although its possible it is more reliable. the xm29 program has been cancelled though. refer to article and source below. " Research and testing shows that the XM29 can be up to 500% more effective than present small arms. However, the program has been effectively cancelled due to problems with cost, weight, bulk, and the lack of lethality of the airburst round. The final prototypes of the XM29 weighed in at about five and a half kilograms when empty, and nearly seven when loaded. Soldiers also complained of the sheer bulk of the weapon system. Regarding cost, some experts even commented that the idea of the XM29 "...seems to make a soldier so expensive to field that he can't be risked in combat." some troops even say they prefer the ak47, which will never happen, but the m-16 is a great rifle. i'd rather them bring back the m-14 though, thats just me.

It really isn't the rifle that becomes standard, there are many special purpose varients of any wepon system. It is the BULLET that becomes standard, and right now in the US military there are two standard rounds.
5.56 mm NATO 5.56 × 45 mm
7.62 mm NATO 7.62 × 51 mm
Talked about the M-16, M-4 and the M-14, but forgot the M-24, M-40

The M16,thee M4 is a scaled down light weight version of the M16,the US Navy still has the M14 in use but slowly replacing it with the M16. I sure hate to see the M14 go far better rifle, usually takes them out with one shot, also more reliable than the M16.

Nope, the army continues to be utilizing the M4 and M16. some specific instruments do use different varieties of weapons however the main weapon continues to be the M4 and M16. there is not any way DoD or military is going to alter the settlement. too plenty invested contained in this methodology now. to alter out might require new application of classes for training the troops with new weapons. too plenty ammunition contained in the equipment to alter and that could be extreme priced. areas, magazines, different kit might prefer to get replaced. alongside with politics between the protection marketplace and considerable gamers in Washington and the Pentagon, it won't ensue.

It should be the M 14. But it's the 16.
BTW, the M16 is changing from automatic to a three round burst with each pull of the trigger.

last time I was in the service a few short years ago it was the m-16a2 rifle with the heavier barrel and 3 round burst instead of full auto to save on bullets.
