Yes, the gauge is larger than most injection needles. Don't be afraid though. I got over my fear of needles by donating blood. The needle they use for donating trumps all the other small needles they used to take small amounts of blood.

You can ask them to use a butterfly needle, they're smaller like an injection needle.

it's somewhat bigger, yes. an insulin needle is usually a 28 or 30 gauge needle, which is very thin. For a blood test, 21 gauge needles are commonly used. (The gauge # gets smaller as the needle diameter gets larger.)

But don't worry! It doesn't really hurt. When the nurse takes the blood test, she will apply a torniquet to your upper arm and ask you to make a fist. When the needle goes in, if done well you don't feel a thing. He/she will draw the blood and then put a bandaid on it. Don't be scared. Just think of something else and don't stare at the needle and the blood collection.

Yes they are thicker than a little injection needle, don't worry, they aren't too huge. Just think of it this way, it will only be a few seconds and some of the people who draw blood do it all the time and are really good. I used to get blood work all the time when I was a kid and there were a few people that were so good at it that I almost didn't feel it. You'll be okay.
