They're successful because of their marketing. I don't care for their coffee nor their prices. I get much more satisfaction with a $.79 cup of joe from 7-11. Starbucks has created a status. I know people that save their Starbucks cups and refill them w/ coffee from other places! I think it's funny, but hey whatever works and to each his own.

Growing up in Seattle, I can tell you that in the early '80's, Starbucks was THE place to get a really good, strong cup of coffee. There were coffee shops, and a few other companies (Stewart Bros/Seattle's Best is one). They also did for coffee what pizza hut did for pizza... took a European idea and Americanized it. It filled much the same niche for coffee drinkers that Red Hook (another Seattle area company) did for microbrews at about the same time. So, first they identified and filled a need with something new.

Second, they started slow and grew within their means. IN the 80's, they grew from just a handful of stores to maybe 20 or 30. Their first significant growth outside of Seattle was in the form of mail order coffee. At that time, Starbucks would fedex coffee to you anywhere.

Then, when they did explode in the 90s, they did so by opening several locations in each new market. When they moved into a new market, they would simultaneously launch like 10 stores. So, very quickly, Starbucks were everwhere, competing with any local companies.

There's a lot more to it, but these are the three main things that I can think of.

Because as Americans, we are long on style, short on substance. Convienience before conviction.

Anyone that pays $3-5 dollars for a bad cup of coffee does not need to complain about gas being $3/gallon.

Because Starbucks Chai is SUPREME. It is the best (they use Tazo teas.) not that inferior **** that dunkin donuts tries to pass off as chai.
If you've never had Chai @Starbucks, I highly recommend it.

For me it is because you can buy a nice cup of coffee, doctor it up with natural sugar and spices, and sit down and stay warm for a while ... without the smell of fries or burgers, which I love.. but not all the time. I think the design of the stores is also attractive.. a little European.
