Permanent hair dye will stay in until you either color it back to your original color, or let it grow out, cutting as it grows. The color will fade a bit over time, but not entirely. They have temporary hair dyes that wash out after 8-10 washes...they're more for if you want to "test" a color.

It depends. Semi-permanent (hair dye levels 1-2) will wash out after so many shampooings. But Permanent (level 3) is a different story. Here is the best explanation for how it works.
I have shoulder length brown hair and I use permanent hair dye to dye it blond. For some months, I do not re-dye my hair and soon it has doubled in length. Over the course of these months, the color has dulled, but the dyed half is still blond. The newer half however is my natural hair color, brown.
You see, with permanent dyes, the hair that has been colored will stay that color until you cut it off. The new hair however will grow back in with your natural hair color (this is why you hear women nag about their roots!) Also, for about a week after the dye job, the color is very intense, shiny and brilliant (but this is only if you didn't leave the color in too long, then the chemicals will burn and ruin your hair) but after so many shampoos, the color will become dull. In the instance of a dyed red-head, for a week, it will be a pretty and shiny, but as time and shampooing wears on, the hair color will remain red, but it will be dull and matte.
Hope you understand what I mean. Good luck!

it fades a little but this can be controlled with shampoo made especially for color-treated hair.
the hair dye is not permanent in that it stays that color for the rest of your life. as the hair grows, you can start to see that the roots are the natural color. many people choose to get "root touchups". if you don't get touchups and keep letting your hair grow out, then cut off the colored part, then your hair will be completely its natural color again.

It is permanent on your hair.. but it will start to fade after a while but not completely. your natural hair color will grow out again and you can just cut out the parts that was dyed.

I wish there was such a product. Unfortunately all hair color fades and your natural color will grow back with any new growth. There are products that help with fading such as Paul Mitchell Color Shampoo. I dye my hair red and I use the Paul Mitchell shampoo for red hair. The shampoo is red and puts color back in my hair until I wash it out the next shampoo. They have this for most hair colors unless you are going pink, purple or something different like that.

It will start to fade...you can also color over it. When I get my hair "low lighted", my hairdresser puts a bleach (not what she calls it) on the parts she wants lighter and a color on the parts she wants darker....
