At the academy that I attended, yes, you have to get sprayed. There are a couple reasons for it.

1. Having experienced it's effects, you can respect and understand the effect it will have if you spray someone with it.

2. Having experienced it's effects, if you are accidently sprayed with it in the field, you will know what to expect and not panic. You will know how to handle yourself if sprayed.

I've only ever used OC spray on one person, but I've been sprayed with it three times. Once was in the academy. Once was when my partner missed the bad guy and got me with part of it. I then had to chase the bad guy and call out the pursuit on the radio, while blinking the stuff out of my eyes. The third time was the one time I sprayed someone. I was so close to him as he was fighting, I got a lot of splash off in the face.

But having been through it in the academy, both times I got sprayed in the field, I knew how to handle myself under those conditions. Both times, bad guy in custody and off the streets. Me on to my next call and next bad guy.

sure and no, it relies upon on the specific branch. oftentimes officers might have a preparation class on the thank you to good use a taser (no longer spelled tazer). in the time of that class they might ask for a volunteer to get hit by utilising the taser so they are able to then describe to the different officers the way it felt, or they might have all and sundry do it. there is not any set coverage between all police departments.

Here in Mississippi, the cops in training also get punched in the face. Even the women cops get hit in the face as part of their training to keep cool when being attacked aggressively.

Yep. Here in Oklahoma if you want to carry it, you have to put up with it. My professor even had us run a little maze after we got sprayed. I was in school at the time, but I know in regular officer training this still holds true.

In my Dept you do.....and it really is not a happy thing.
However, every time I've used OC spray (pepper spray) I've gotten it back in my face.
As far as getting shot to see how that feels....sounds like a common sense test to me...and those that fail...would you want them on the street to protect YOU? LOL

if you want to be able to carry it you must know the effects first hand so that way you know what you are doing to the person you are sprying and dont over spray them. if you never felt the pepper spray you might just whip it out when its not needed and spray people that did not deserve to get sprayed. they dont want cops being overly abusive to people. same thing goes for the taser.

my son in law works in the jail system in NC. It was part of his training to be sprayed in the face and THEN have to immediately follow an obstacle course

They not only wanted him to experience it, but be able to maneuver himself should he accidently get sprayed during an altercation with an inmate.

Yep. You can get a medical excuse to get out of it, but here in AR if you carry OC spray, you go through the training which includes getting sprayed.

I've got proof :). Got my own video of 63 of us getting sprayed.
