The best thing you can do is speak to someone. I made the mistake of internalizing my depression for years, thinking that I could fix the problem on my own and to avoid embarrassment. The thing you need to understand is that your depression can't be fixed on your own. You need to speak to someone. If you are in school, look into free counseling. This can be done anonymously. Otherwise, confide in a close friend or family member if possible. I realize this is very difficult, but trust me... the best thing you can do is begin to talk with someone about your depression to help uncover why you might be depressed.

Go to the doctor if it's been longer than 2 weeks. Everyone gets mild depression occasionallt but you may need medicine if it lasts longer than 2 weeks.

Why be afraid to tell someone? It's no different than getting a cold. Almost everyone gets depressed to the point where they need help. Some seek help and get back to normal. Others resist getting help and go around unhappy or they become a pain in the butt to family and friends.

Tell your doctor. It's really not such a big deal. And if you are depressed you probably aren't hiding it from others anyway.

Everyone gets the blues once in awhile. We have things happen that cause us to get sad, but usually you spring back with time. If however, you find yourself feeling blue, and its effecting your everyday functioning in life, if you are sleeping to much, not eating, avoiding friends and family, then you should speak to your Doctor about this. He will ask you some questions that will help him decide how best to treat you. Sometimes counciling is what he will recommend, other times along with the counciling he might prescribe a anti-depressant too. Don't be afraid to tell someone close to you if you need help. And remember, things can get better. Good luck and chin up.

It is so very important that you see a doctor. I let my depression go and suffered some pretty serious consequences. I have been on medication for a long time now and my quality of life is amazing compared to what I was used to. I am happily married with wonderful children and I have a great career. Where I used to sleep all day, cry all night and think about dying all the time, I look forward to each day and what it might bring. Please, please see a doctor about this. You've already taken the first step, which is identifying the fact that you have a problem.

first of all, check your local phone book for a mental health hot-line you can call and talk to someone anonymously.

you need to be able to identify if your depression is situational: has something happened in your life recently to bring you sadness?...a death, a break-up, relocated to a new town, loss of job, etc.

is your depression seasonal? do you feel down in the dumps every winter, due to the gloomy weather and inability to get out and do things?

is your depression clinical? have you ever been diagnosed with clinical depression, or have you had bouts of depression on and off that last a week or more in duration?

depression can be short term, like situational...the situation improves, your depression improves. if you feel it's heavier and more complicated than that, then you need to have an evaluation by a clinical psychologist, or by a psychiatrist. your family doctor might prescribe temporary anti-depressant meds until you can get an eval. if you don't have medical coverage, you can get assistance through your county mental health dept. most private practice therapists have a sliding-fee scale...you pay based upon your ability to pay. if you are a student, talk with the school psychologist.

whomever you choose to talk to, must protect your privacy, by law. however, if you are a minor, the health care provider has a responsibility to report if you attempt, or threaten suicide.

your depression may be caused by a chemical imbalance, or from emotional problems. either way, it's nothing to be ashamed of...you can't control it, it's not your fault, and there is nothing wrong with needing some help to get through this.

i was diagnosed with clinical depression when i was 13 yrs old, but had been depressed since about age 4. i lived through my teenage years suffering in silence, attempting suicide, and self-medicating through drug and alcohol use. please believe me when i tell you that you don't have to suffer in silence. the sooner you get some help with this, the sooner you will be able to cope with your problems, and life will get better.
i hope this has been helpful for you, and i wish you the very best of luck.

if u think it really is depression a doctor can help diagnose it and if u too scared to tell anyone then there is nothin anyone can do for u. if u dont wanna go to the doctor u can talk to sum1 anyone and just let it all out. do sumthin u love to take ur mind off of everything. i hav been sent to a mental hospital for cutting wen i was depressed (still am and i still cut but...) and now iv found that being able to go outside at night and sit down and just hav a little me time to think and relax helps a lot. i havnt stopped cutting completely and im still depressed but im not cutting as much and im less depressed than before.

Well one thing is....don't try to diagnose yourself. You may see those commercials that say if you have these symptoms then you may be depressed but don't jump to conclusions. Also make sure it might not be mood swings or something like that. Ask a prefessional. Someone on an online forum might not know anything but what he/she has saw on the televsion.

Get out and visit a hospital or nursing home, this will give you something to be thankful that you are in fairly good health talk with them about their problems this may help you to realize what is causing your depression. Visit with your friends and get the latest gossip. I would tell someone how I feel, maybe they would help you to feel why you are depressed. You might want to see a doctor and possibly get medicine to help fight this depression. Good luck.

This is a very good blog, a beginner’s guide to abnormal psychology.
Short, clear and simple; and you can even post your question and contact the author regarding particular subject you are interested in, for FREE

You need to see a doctor or social worker who can make the proper diagnosis.

This is one illness you cannot deal with by yourself.

You may also need medications and therapy.

Good luck.
