I've seen a couple of questions regarding Dora the Explorer and how she speaks spanish. God forbid children grow up to be bilingual or trilingual. Dora has nothing to do with "Brainwashing" as some called it, to accept those of who are Hispanic/Latinos, it is simply a cartoon and an educational one that teaches two languages. If that is too hard to accept, then some people should go live in a cave.

The question is whether those who live here and didn't have expensive ESL education, making them bilingual in Spanish and English, should be expected or required to have any knowledge of that language.

Many would like to be bilingual, but when I went through the LAUSD I could choose French, German or Spanish as my language (I chose French). Now the program cuts are so severe, our children are only offered Spanish, if that, and many aren't interested in learning Spanish.

A bilingual person is a good thing. A bilingual culture/country is not. The more languages a society accepts, the more dificult it will be for communications as a whole.

Also, look at it from an education perspective. If all of the kids speak one language, the teacher can dedicate more time to teaching not translating.

I think most people's problem isn't with people who speak Spanish as much as it is with people who don't speak English.

English is, and should remain, the primary and official language of the United States. The anatomy and history of the entire brouhaha about language is that there's some areas and townships in the southern United States that'd really like to start conducting business en espanol. Mexico's trying to 'boost' small pieces of our civil system and infrastructure, there. Don't let em get by with it. English only, please, for all official business/govt. business etc. English isn't that hard to learn, it's used worldwide for business, may as well get over it and learn...I agree though that trying to pick up more languages is a Good Thing...they should offer dutch and chinese, maybe in K-12...also french, german, russian, arabic, tagalog, so forth, and so on. And, of course, spanish, but spanish is so over-represented today in america, there should be emphasis on introducing others.

Being bilingual, whatever the languages may be is an absolutely great thing to be. Those using Dora the Explorer as a lame excuse at trying to belittle those who speak Spanish are simply, as they like to state it, "grasping at straws". Hopefully their children do watch these shows and learn to be more tolerant and accepting of children who are different than themselves which is more than I can say for their parents. What a shame.

Being bilingual is a wonderful thing and teaching our children at an early age will help them to learn it faster and better. How arrogant of people to think that English is the only language we should know. Here is the thing: If I moved to Mexico, I would learn Spanish but if someone gave me the opportunity to speak English or Spanish, i would choose English. Whats the harm in giving Spanish speaking citizens the same option?

It is not a bad thing at all. As a matter of fact, it is a great thing! I love being bilingual. Especially speaking the two most spoken languages in US: English and Español!!!

Americans don't like other nations criticizing their country but you guys whine about just anything! You are too used to live within your comfort zone and once it starts to change you fell the whole world is falling apart. If Dora the Explorer's purpose was to change "the face of America" (something that doesn't exist since it is a melting pot), then it is also trying to change Latin America's face (something that DOES exist) since there it is backwards, Dora speaks Spanish and talks to certain characters in English. You guys need to stop being so self-centered and find out the world that lays beyond the Pacific and Atlantic seas.

well there is a good and bad side to being bilingual. the good part is that you will have a better chance of getting jobs relating to oversea communications(like translators) than the people who only know one then learn the other when they choose a job. and the bad part is that you will have to fequently switch between 2+ languages which can be very confusing at times.

It is not bilingual that is the problem, it is people refusing to learn English. Learn English first, that is all.

English is the commonly used language in America, if you refuse to learn it, then you are refusing to be part of America. If we can't speak to one another, then how are we suppose to function as a nation ?

Learn English, or stay out, It is that simple.

and most important ................. SWIPER, NO SWIPING !!!!

My 7 year old, loves Dora.

This is a post I made just a few hours ago, on this subject. I hope it will explain the stance on language barriers.
