The ultimate reference for the history of physical therapy is a book: "Healing the Generations: A History of Physical Therapy & the American Physical Therapy Association" written by Wendy B. Murphy. It may be available at a local college library. Or you can purchase it for $75 from the APTA (http://www.apta.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=History&template=/ECommerce/ProductDisplay.cfm&ProductID=458 ). Also, the APTA website has information and pictures on it's website here: http://www.apta.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=History_and_Information&Template=/TaggedPage/TaggedPageDisplay.cfm&TPLID=48&ContentID=14772 . There is information on the history of the Federation of State Boards of PT here: http://www.fsbpt.org/about/history.asp

Time magazine has some old archived articles on PT:

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,749084,00.html?promoid=googlep

These websites offer some information, but I would be wary of their authenticity:
http://www.eugenept.com/history.html
http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3969/is_200301/ai_n9302437
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_Therapy

Good luck!

Wikiepedia gives a pretty accurate explanation of Physical Therapy. You should also check out the APTA (American Physical Therapy) website for more information.
