The guy in the middle was dreaming about skiing... (think about it a minute)...
al p and esugrad97 got it right. Usually when I tell this joke I simply say "He was dreaming about skiing" and make the motions of using ski poles with my hands...
I really like telling this joke just to see the looks of realization come over people's faces! Its hilarious!
