Research both breeds and talk with reputable breeders. We don't know you, don't know your lifestyle, don't know your activity level, don't know your house, and just don't know anything about you. To blindly recommend a dog without knowing you is irresponsible.

A Border Collie will require around 2 hours of exercise and tasks a day. Not just going for walks and running in the backyard, but actual tasks - like finding the yellow frisbee, herding the sheep, learning new tricks, etc. They ARE NOT for apartment dwellers who work 8 hours a day and then come home and crash on the couch. Heck, they aren't even for suburbian families in houses with small yards and a stay at home mom who can't give individual attention to the dog. They are the most intelligent dog breed and need a job to do.

Goldies are nice dogs, but you have to be prepared for shedding, lots of food, lots of poop, and lots of accidents as a pup. The can be great family dogs. But, years of bad breeding from unethical breeders have given these poor dogs terrible hip disorders, elbow disorders, and eye disorders. They also require plenty of exercise and attention, but walks and playing fetch for an hour or two a day is often plenty.

If you travel frequently, work more than 5 hours at a time regularly (and don't want to do doggy daycare), and don't have a yard, you may want to reconsider getting a dog altogether. A cat may fit your needs a little better.

Be sure to find out what a reputable breeder is and ask lots of questions. Lots of links below for you. : )

Golden Retriever.
A trainer I saw on TV said the Border Collie is not a pet. It is a working dog and requires a job and if you don't give it a job it will find a job by itself that you may not like.
She trains shows and has rescued Border Collies. She said That a good toy for a Border Collie is a FARM.
This dog will not relax it will always be looking for something that needs doing. That would drive Me Crazy.
People tie them out behind their house on a cable trolley or turn them in at the Animal Shelter.
The Golden Retriever will need plenty of attention and exercise. If you are wanting a big dog you would enjoy it. They do shed.
Be sure you do read about the breeds and care. Go into dog ownership with your eyes wide open.
There is a book out called "The perfect puppy" It discusses many breeds and their needs.
Check out Petfinder.com
You might find a Golden that someone has loved that they have to find a new home for because of extenuating circumstances.
Good luck. I hope you are a good owner for a great dog.

Borders are one of the most intelligent breeds there is. Some say that they have the intelligence of a 3 year old child. Because of this, they will get bored very easily if not kept exercised and given jobs to do on a daily basis. That could lead to destructive behavior in your home. Goldens also are a smart dog, but more laid back and not so needy. But, they too will need daily exercise to keep them happy.
