In the Assemblies of God Church we as Pastors tithe 10% of ministerial income to the district, and 10% of all income from sources outside of the church to our home church. I can only answer for the Assemblies, because I am an AG Pastor.

It is nobodies business how much or even if a person tithes. That is between that person and God. Any church that would do like you described is not a church that represents God, and they either need to get their focus right or close the doors.

Many things are wrong with the church. Starting with your question, the LORD GOD ordered the Jews to pay tithes in the Old Covenant. This Covenant was to make the Jews holy enough for Jesus to come from among them. The LORD GOD promised this to Abraham in Genesis 12:3. Jesus Christ established a New Covenant that has nothing to do with tithes. Matthew 26:26-28. The Bible tells us "By calling this covenant
"new", he has made the fist one obsolete; and what is obsolete and ageing will soon disappear." Hebrews 8:13.

Of course, pastors don't pay tithes. They misappropriate them. Turn your Bible to Deuteronomy 14:22-29 for GOD's directives on what should happen to the tithes taken to the Temple in Jerusalem.

All churches, irrespective of denomination or creed, are, first and foremost, business concerns. That is an unpleasant fact that you must realize.

The teaching of Jesus Christ excludes church. He says that not even the Temple in Jerusalem is a place of worship in the new dispensation. John 4:21. So, what do you expect? Any thing goes.

It might depend on the church. For our church at least, the pastors and leaders all tithe, or should. I don't believe that there is some special status, that allows one to be relieved from the giving of tithes. See, giving tithes is a huge part of worship, to give back a small amount of what's been given, it sort of lets God know that you still trust in him, and you are still relying on him. If you took everything you were given, and spent it on yourself, the person who gave it to you might think, "They must feel they've done this themselves, that the strength of their hands has gotten them this far." Tithing sort of says to God, "Look, I know my money comes from You, and I'm gonna remind myself of that constantly by giving a little back." Plus, it helps the church, which most churches give to Charities and help the poor. :)

The only requirement for Christians is 10:23-24. And tithe is not one of them. Tithe is a tax for the Jewish temple destroyed in 70 AD.

Priests are not employees of the Church; they are clerical part of the Church. They serve where ever the authority (usually bishop) sends them. The authority provides for their care.

Pastors are shepherds of Christ's flocks. When they are salaried, the pay to the support of the Church.

If you find a member of the clergy more interested in the buildings, it is time to find a new Shepherd.

My Pastor pays his tithe. He tells us about how when he was really struggling in the early days of the church that the Devil tried to tempt him into thinking that his life of service should count as his offering to God's kingdom work but that he fought that off and has always been faithful. http://www.alcf.net

Seems like we're getting back to that system where you can buy your way into heaven, huh? Kinda like the middle ages?

I had never heard of tithing until I moved south. I don't know of anyone who does that in the north. In the church I attended when I was younger, they were happy if you put a quarter in the collection plate.

I've known several priests who regularly contribute to the collection. One of them said that while he was an employee of the church (so to speak), he was also part of the community and he felt it was his duty to contribute financially.

The Catholic Churches I've worked with keep lists of parshioners that are unrelated to the amounts of their contributions. The Catholic Church also has a rule about not denying a Catholic things like a funeral. If you live within the geographic boundaries of a church, that church is duty-bound to administer the sacraments to you. Money has nothing to do with it.
