Of course you can paint melamine and it's a great low cost makeover that will do wonders in your kitchen or anywhere else for that matter. What's even more fun is that you can now get melamine paint in dozens and dozens and dozens of colors!
The first step is to clean the surfaces with tsp. I recommend you use the liquid version, which is not toxic like the powder you have to mix. You can find it in any diy store or large surface renovating store like home depot. Make sure you wash everywhere. And another good thing about using the liquid is that you won't have to rinse after.
Once you've cleaned to remove any trace of grease, oil, or any other substance, you must then prime the cabinets with an oil based primer. there is no such thing as a melamine primer but oil primer will do the trick as you can paint on top of this with any kind of paint.
You will need melamine paint though. You won't be able to get around that. It usually works better with sponge brushes and rollers and goes on much smoother with sponge.
Pretty much use any color you want... enjoy!

Look in the paint department at any diy shop and they should have a primer specifically for melamine. Once you have used this you can paint the surface..it works well.

DIY stores sell special paint to cover melamine surfaces in one coat. Some need primer, some do not. You will need to read the tin.
I used some on my kitchen cupboards last year and it was much more cost effective than a new kitchen.

You have to use paint that is made to paint on melamine. Otherwise it will not stay & you will have a mess. Ask your hardware store about whether or not you must prime first-I think you do, but I can't remember.

You can paint it, if you use matt paint it might chip off, if you use eggshell it should be ok, but its best to give it a good sanding and use some primer first.
