i posted in another thred "scared to let my baby teil fly" well turns out i had good need to worrie,i became so worried about my baby birds condition, i rang a expert who came to my home to check "Dusty" and he said that "he" as store sold him was in fact a "she" and that she was approx 8 weeks old NOT "12 weeks plus" as sold, he said she was suffering from server malnutrition and her lack of head feathers looked like the result of other birds "ripping them out of her head" :(
she was in such a bad way that she has had to be taken in to recive specalist care and is being feed from a spoon every 2 hours,a deiet used for new born chicks, i only had dusty 2 days and i knew from day one something wasnt right, so why do stores employ ppl to look after animals with out first making them take "what i think" should be compulsry training course?
i was told had i not contacted for help Dusty would have been lucky to make it through the weekend, how do workers in these stores sleep at night?

Hi sdkramer7...
I think your comments about ami_boverd being "as bad as those responsabale for selling Dusty" are a little unfair, i know ami_boverd personaly and i know the reason she bought this "baby cockatile" wasnt because she thought it looked cute" or "on a whim" it was because (even though shes no bird expert) she could see this baby bird shouldnt have been in this avarie !
i mean lets face it, if ur an animal lover u dont have to be a "rocket scientist" to relize when something is wrong do you?

And ami_boverd has been told off "avarion vet" had she not bought Dusty and sought the help she did for this poor little bird then Dusty wouldnt have been here today :(
As for bonding, "Dusty" after 1 day trusted ami_boverd 100% and gladly eat the food fed off a spoon by ami_boverd :) and drank water from a dropper, Dusty even climed onto ami_boverd hand when she put her hand on the floor of the cage (parm up) and she snuggled up in there! if thats not trust i dont know what is?

i think when Dusty comes home she will be comeing to a home that will give her a life time of love and all the care she will ever need :)

Quick update!!!!
Poor little "Dusty" weighs just 53grams (bought half her proper weight i think) :( the vet has added another formula to be given every second feed,he also warned about a "wasting dises" some birds can have for which there is no qure, the vet didnt want to do blood test just yet wants weight recorded 4 week first, and Dusty cant be tryed on seed till next wendnesday,so ive got my fingers crossed she'll be ok!
other wise the kindest thing the vet said would be to have her put to sleep :(

First, contact your equivalent to the Better Business Bureau for your area. Then, I'd call some local breeders and ask their opinion on the store.

Normally, I try to be really supportive of the questions asked here on these boards. However...

You are pretty much just as much at fault as the pet store. If you would've done your homework prior to purchasing the bird, you would've known what a 12 week old bird should have looked like, acted like, and all about hand-feedings and such.

Birds aren't really something you should purchase on impulse because they're cute. I mean, a cat, you can probably rehome fairly easily should you need to (not that I'm condoning that either, but I'm just sayin'...) but a bird lives on trust and trust alone. If you can't earn the bird's trust, you aren't going to have a relationship with the pet. It is your RESPONSIBILITY to educate yourself on all topics related to your species before purchasing.

That being said, I'm very, very sorry about Dusty. It's horrible that the pet store would do that to the baby, and you should do whatever you can to prevent them from doing it again.

We do have a pet store that I very much support here, it's called Preuss Pets. Check it out.... www.Preusspets.com We're purchasing a Greenwing Macaw from them now. She'll be home after weaning in early February.

I would contact the owner of the pet store and let them know what happened. The owner will then make sure his or her managers and staff are properly trained on selling their birds. That bird was too young to leave the breeders who sold it to the pet store if it still has to be hand fed.

All birds that are sold at pet stores should be old enough to be eating and drinking very well on their own before being sold.

This little one should not have been in a cage with other older ones as they will pick on the younger birds even though they are the same kind of bird.

You can help prevent this from happening to someone else and prevent another bird that is too young to be sold from dieing from starvation by contacting the pet store owner.

Good Luck :-)

Pet shops buy from breeders, this is a breeder issue mainly, but you are correct concerning the pet shop knowing better.
I never buy from a pet shop, always the breeder, petshops hire folks that simply don't know birds, they are hired to help and this is all that matters, I frankly would have some serious words with the petshop concerning this issue and report them to the BBB.
You have a un-wiened baby bird, this happens alot, I am a rescue person, I see this alot, I pray all happens well for your little friend, however this problem is a real issue and needs a real responce from you directed at the pet shops, and warn others about this petshop.

I dont know. I have chosen NOT to support pet strores, because I think if everyone does this they will go out of buisness. The only things I nuy are food and cages. I make my own toys and get breeder direct birds, or buy them from private dealears, they actually care for the birds, and know more about them to keep them alive. Also, they are alot cheeper than pet stores. If you want to chat more about this email me at shaynebirds@hotmail.com ! bye!
