Ok, so my dad is 55, and approx 4 months ago was diagnosed with cancer. He's advanced as if he were to do the surgery, it would remove his voice box and leave him with both a breathing tube and a permanent stomach peg. The last time he had any treatment was 3 weeks ago (he is scheduled to commence proper radiation/chemo on the 5th of december). I guess i'm asking whether or not it is likely he will be ok? I know that after the treatment he will be in remission, but what is the likely outcome. I need to prepare myself, and my family for the most likely outcome :( I know that each situation is different, which is why i'm not relying on statistics, but its seems that everything I read, it is likely the patient may last a few years after the treatment, but the best they can do is slow the cancer down, rather than rid the cancer cells, and leave him in remission. Also - how likely is it that the cancer will spread within the next few weeks??

Much appreciated and thanks

My Nana had the same kind of cancer. She had to get a feeding tube in her stomach because the throat cancer was so advanced. But after the treatment the cancer went into remission for a year. She lived a total of 5 years with the cancer. God bless her. It really depends on the person how long they may live. And with the proper treatment, maybe your Dad will be just fine. You can't rely on statistics to tell you these kind of things. He may be ok, and he may pass away. Cancer is a horrible thing. And a breathing tube and a stomach peg is not a comfortable thing ( I am a cna i see it in a lot of patients) Best I can tell you for what to expect, is really try not expect good or bad. Just be with your Dad , and let him know how much you love him. Good luck. Much love and peace.

You have to consult his oncologist. Ask these questions with your Dad's permission or with him present. Sometimes patients luck out and radiation/chemo work. But surgery removes the bulk of the tumor mass and reduces the instances of recurrence and/or metastasis so that the follow up radiation and chemo work on what is left, if any. Good luck and keep fingers crossed

From what I have read there is a much higher chance of success by using alternative therapies than there is by having surgery.
Cancer is a whole body thing, and will just reappear somewhere else.
