People live just fine on one kidney. In fact, a neighbor of mine gave one of his away and he is OK. We only need one kidney and we can live a totally normal life.
I can't imagine how frightened you are right now. All I can do is reassure you that people live perfectly normal lives with one kdiney.

I've just turned 42 and when I was 6 months old I was diagnosed with a Wilmes Tumor on my left Kidney.
Since then, other than some restrictions by my Doctor regarding certain contact sports I have lived a normal life.
For many years I was not allowed to donate blood due to the remote possibility of Cancer cells within my blood however i am told that is not a problem anymore.
This was back in 1964 so the Wilmes was fairly new back then. In fact I was my Doctors first case.
For a few years I was the only known survivor of this certain type of Cancer primarily because of the uncommon pain I suffered which alerted my Doctor to the problem.
Typically children stricken with Wilmes have no pain until the Cancer has already spread to other organs and Kemo becomes the only option. At the time of my surgery about 7 years old was the life expectancy.
In fact, my Senior year in High School I learned that the Hospital in which I had surgery actually had recorded my death in their records.

Quality of life can be fine, my daughters father has had only one functioning kidney from birth. He is just fine. You can also donate a kidney while still alive, the remaining kidney enlarges and does the work of two without any problem. I will keep your baby in my prayers tonight.

I'm sure you can live a perfectly normal life with just one kidney, think about it people can donate a kidney and still live ok. I'm sure your wee boy will be fine, but your a parent and of course you'll worry, but you'll be laughing about this in a years time when he's starting to run about. take care and best of luck for tomorrow.

One of my very best friends has only had 1 kidney since she was 8. She was told not to have children, but that is the only problem she has faced. God Bless your son!

surgery is not life threatening and has a very good outcome. i am a childrens nurse and cared for lots of children who had this procedure done. It is a big enough operation but very safe. People can cope very well with a good functioning kidney without any problem. Best of luck to you and your son. he will be fine.

Your son will be fine good thing you picked up problem early. My husband was born with only one working kidney they only discovered it much later after he started suffering from high blood pressure and weak eyes. 20 Years after removal he is doing absolutely great and the one kidney enlarges and works as good as two. Dont worry your son will be fine. God Bless.
