Excellent question...there should NOT be exemptions for these institutions...I agree, they should pay tax on real estate, that is for sure...and only bonefide charities should be tax exempt. Most churches seem intent on improving the minister's life style, not charity work. Perhaps it is time to eliminate all of the exemptions.

they dont pay taxes because they are not for profit-just like if you donate money to a non profit you can deduct it on your taxes. dont worry about the churches not paying taxes just look at some of the big corporations like oil companies who get huge tax beaks to find alternate fuels or future exploration or some other made up bs and make billions in profits every year

Because they are NON PROFIT organizations. The non religious and religious alike will pay taxes on already taxed income over and over. That's taxation without representation!

Hardly, if the regular government were to try to pay the charity dollars the Churches give out they would go broke.

Non-Religious who have to pay more money than whom. Churches are not for profit and all in that category are treated the same whether they are religious or non-religious.

Religious people have to pay the same amount of taxes. Churches are tax-exempt organizations and they are not the only tax-exempt organizations around.

Another question to ask yourself is why can Christians deduct money given to the church which goes directly to a family member for a prostelytizing "mission?" I would prefer deductions for college educations, wouldn't you?
